Ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer among women globally,1 and it is a leading cause of death from gynaecological cancers in developed countries. With vague symptoms and lack of an appropriate screening strategy, most epithelial ovarian cancers (EOCs) are diagnosed at a late stage, and more than half of patients with advanced disease recur in the first few years. Surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy remains the mainstay treatment. In recent years, there are new trends in the approach to surgery, particularly in advanced disease. Meanwhile, evidence on the use of targeted therapy has emerged. Recent advances in primary treatment of ovarian cancer will be discussed in this review.
