Laboratory Tests and Ancillaries
Allergy Testing
Allergy testing is considered as the results would
help in the management of the disease and the identification of allergens to
facilitate avoidance. In doing so, it is important to recommend the patient an expert
referral.
Skin Tests and Specific IgE
Tests
Skin tests and specific IgE tests are used to
differentiate allergic from nonallergic rhinitis or to determine specific
causative allergens. The skin test is preferred due to its better sensitivity,
faster results, and lesser cost.
Nasal Smear for Eosinophils
Eosinophils may be seen in both allergic and
nonallergic rhinitis. The presence of eosinophilia predicts a good response to
topical nasal corticosteroid medication. Nasal smears for eosinophilia may be
performed when allergic symptoms are present.
