Overview
Chronic pelvic pain is a persistent, distressing, and severe pain of >6 months duration; occurs intermittently, cyclically, or situationally; localized to the pelvis, anterior abdominal wall at or below the umbilicus, the lumbosacral back, or the buttocks; and is severe enough to cause functional disability or need medical care.
A complete and detailed history should include organ-specific inquiries on gastroenterologic, gynecologic,musculoskeletal, urologic and neurologic symptoms including a thorough review of systems of infectious,endocrine, psychiatric and sexual disorders.
Patients should be offered pain control with appropriate analgesia even if therapeutic maneuvers have not yet been initiated.
