Male voiding behaviour varies daily, worsens with age

Voiding parameters in older men vary from day to day, throughout the day, and worsen with age, as shown by an assessment of 19,824 uroflows using an accurate and precise home uroflow device.

“Multiple measurements performed at home provides a more realistic assessment of true voiding behaviour by capturing individual voiding variability and can help urologists make better decisions in patient care,” the authors said.

In this study, a total of 19,824 unique voiding profiles were captured between April 2019 and June 2020 using the Stream Dx Uroflowmeter and were then retrospectively analysed. Age and number of voids were summarized by mean±standard deviation.

The authors used mixed effects models to compare average values and intrapatient variability of voiding parameters to time of day and age. In addition, they used the coefficient of variation to evaluate intrapatient variability.

Of the 637 patients identified, 625 (mean age 67±10.2 years) met the inclusion criteria, producing 19,824 voids overall. Each patient provided on average 5±3.3 voids a day through 7 days. Notable variability was noted in average intrapatient voiding parameters, where the coefficient of variation for maximum flow was 27.6 percent (95 percent confidence interval, 26.6–28.6).

Early morning voids correlated with higher volume and lower number of voids. As age progressed, voiding profiles deteriorated in a linear way. Furthermore, afternoon and evening voids correlated with reduced intrapatient variability relative to early morning voids.
