Rhytides or wrinkles are visible creases or folds in the skin.
Fine wrinkles is <1 mm in width while coarse wrinkles is >1 mm in width.
It is formed by dermal atrophy and repetitive contraction of underlying facial musculature. It is caused by progressive collagen loss resulting in low elasticity of tissue and lower cellular reproduction.
The decision to treat wrinkles depends on the degree that they bother the patient, the nature and severity of the wrinkles, and the patient's willingness to accept the risks and costs of treatment.
It is suggested that combined modalities tailored to patient’s skin type and location can be the most effective strategy in managing rhytides.
The patient should understand that protection from the sun at any age will reduce the risk of photoaging (including wrinkles), actinic keratoses and squamous cell cancer. Treatments for wrinkles are less effective and may be more hazardous without adequate sun protection.
For further information regarding the management of Rhytides or Wrinkles, please refer to Treatment Guideline.
