Pharmacist-led training of HCPs helps reduce harmful effects of cytotoxic drugs

Mandatory training of healthcare professionals (HCPs) for the safe handling of cytotoxic drugs (CDs) conducted by a qualified oncology-pharmacist results in a decrease in the hazardous effects of CDs, reports a study.

A group of researchers conducted a prospective, interventional study among HCPs involved in handling of CDs in the oncology department of a tertiary care hospital. They performed interviews and administered questionnaires to obtain initial data from the HCPs.

Eligible participants were then trained by an oncology-pharmacist from 7‒8 months on how to safely handle CDs. After the training, the participants were tested again via interviews and questionnaires.

Seventy-three participants were identified, of whom 75 precent were nurses and 25 percent physicians. Only 32.87 percent of the participants underwent training on reconstitution, while 67.12 percent did not undergo any training. Mean scores in knowledge, attitude, and practice increased after the training: 3.44, 1.23, and 1.3, respectively.

These findings highlight improvisation techniques for handling of CDs, which improve the safety profile of HCPs and patients. Such intervention enhances the quality of pharmaceutical and healthcare services provided in cancer care settings.

“CDs are hazardous in nature, but [these are] necessary for the treatment in cancer patients,” the researchers said.

“HCPs act as a facilitator through which the manufactured CDs reach the patient. However, safe handling of CDs becomes a primary concern not only for the recipients but also for the HCPs,” they added.
