Nutritional Supplementation in Children (Patient Counselling Guide)
A healthy diet is important for a child's growth and development and prevention of certain conditions eg, obesity and diabetes. It is recommended that children (age 21 years and below) eat food from the different food groups in order to ensure a healthy intake of calories along with all the essential nutrients including carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals. These nutrients can be found in foods eg, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Inadequate intake of nutritious food and excess consumption of foods high in fat, salt, and sugar lead to nutritional deficiency and increase a child's risk of developing long-term health consequences. Aside from a lack of a balanced diet and poor food choices, nutritional deficiency may also occur in children with food allergy or intolerance.
