Nutritional Supplementation in Pregnancy (Patient Counselling Guide)
Pregnancy is a period of rapid fetal growth and development as well as maternal physiological change. Nutrient requirements are increased to provide for the optimal growth and development of the fetus and to support maternal health. Undernutrition and overnutrition can bring about adverse pregnancy outcomes. Undernutrition is associated with impaired placental formation, fetal growth restriction, low birth weight, and preterm delivery, while excessive weight or obesity during pregnancy may result in complications eg, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, and fetal macrosomia (baby is born with a much larger size and weight than the average).
