Osteoporosis (Patient Counselling Guide)
The skeletal system is composed of bones, joints, and cartilages. It provides the framework, structure, and support for the entire body. Therefore, the bones are exposed to continuous wear and tear during any activity. There are two main characteristics which describe bones: bone strength and bone density, both of which are essential in maintaining functionality and are greatly influenced by the amount of calcium in the body. Bone development peaks as a person reaches adolescence and may continue up to age 30, after which bones start to degenerate. The bones then become thin, weak, and brittle, a condition known as Osteoporosis. Risk factors include: gender, age, race, genetics or family history, lifestyle, and diet. Women, in general, are more prone to develop osteoporosis than men mainly because of the cessation of estrogen production during menopausal stage.Bone mineral density (BMD) may be used to measure osteoporosis.
