Postponing Menstruation (Patient Counselling Guide)
Postponing Menstruation, also known as delaying menstruation or menstrual manipulation, refers to the use of hormonal contraceptives to control the frequency and volume of menstrual periods, in effect avoiding the discomfort caused by its accompanying symptoms (eg, abdominal cramping, severe headache, feeling of weakness,and/or bloating). Some women suffer from painful or debilitating menstruation, hence, opting to avoid periods for the purpose of attending or enjoying special occasions (eg, honeymoon, planned vacation, athletic competition, or important exam). In some instances, having certain conditions that may be aggravated by menstruation (eg, endometriosis, anemia, migraine) may necessitate avoidance or postponement of menstruation. Since a woman’s menstrual cycle is controlled by her hormones, any alterations in their levels can dramatically influence the date as to when her period arrives.
