Psoriasis (Patient Counselling Guide)
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder characterized by thick, red patches of skin that are covered with white or silvery scales. The condition is mostly seen in areas of the scalp, elbows, knees, trunk, and intergluteal folds. Its etiology is known to be hereditary and can appear at any age. The exact cause of this condition is not fully known but may be associated with the overproduction of new skin cells, leading to the buildup of live cells and profuse shedding of the outer skin layer. This may be influenced by several factors eg, heredity, stress, infections, smoking, alcohol, and certain medications.
