Respiratory Tract Infection (Patient Counselling Guide)

Respiratory tract infections (RTI) are infections of the breathing passages caused by bacteria or viruses. It can be classified as upper RTI or lower RTI. Upper RTI involves the upper organs of the respiratory tract eg, the nose and throat. Lower RTI, on the other hand, involves the trachea (thin-walled tube connecting the larynx to the bronchi and carrying air to the lungs), bronchi (branch of the trachea), and the lungs.
