Weight Management (Patient Counselling Guide)
Weight Management is defined as the interventions done to achieve or maintain a healthy body weight. There are several means of controlling weight and among these are modifications on diet and exercise or a regular visit to the physician who can prescribe drugs that will aid in controlling weight. Not all weight abnormalities are due to improper diet or activity variations, some may be due to underlying diseases eg, thyroid disorders. Also, several factors have been identified eg, age, gender, activity level, food preferences, medications, and other socioeconomic and hereditary factors. Excessive weight may increase the chances of an individual to develop certain forms of cancer. On the other hand, being underweight may indicate malnutrition. In cases of unexplained weight loss, this might be caused by other illnesses eg, cancer, COPD, and diabetes.
