Specific serologic testing identifies the different types of hepatitis (eg Hepatitis A, D, and E). Viral diseases such as yellow fever, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, HIV, rubella, rubeola, coxsackie B, adenovirus, herpes simplex, and herpes zoster may be considered as alternative diagnoses in patients suspected of hepatitis B virus infection.
Nonviral diseases such as leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis, alcoholic hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, drug-induced hepatitis or liver injury, toxic hepatitis, cirrhosis, HCC, and Wilson disease should likewise be ruled out.
