Cholestasis is any condition that causes bile formation and/or bile flow impairment that may lead to the retention of conjugated bilirubin and its regurgitation into serum, increase in the serum concentration of unconjugated bilirubin, and an increase in bile salts.
Clinical presentation of intrahepatic cholestasis includes fatigue, pruritus and jaundice
History and physical examination are essential diagnostic processes for the experienced clinician to predict the nature of cholestasis.
Pharmacotherapy include the use of Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants.
