Leiomyomas or uterine fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus that consist of smooth muscle and extracellular matrix collagen and elastin.
Depending on the size, number, and location, leiomyomas vary in symptomatology, but common symptoms include abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic mass and pelvic pressure symptoms (eg increased abdominal girth, urinary frequency and urgency, urinary incontinence or retention), infertility, and non-cyclic pelvic pain.
Fibroid classification may use the European Society for Gynecological Endoscopy (ESGE) or the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) classification wherein the degree of uterine cavity distortion and/or intramural extension are taken into account.
The type of surgery will depend on patient’s age, symptoms, and preference, position, size, and number of fibroids and patient’s desire to retain reproduction potential. Asymptomatic leiomyomas do not usually need surgery.
For further information regarding the management of Leiomyomas, please refer to Disease Algorithm for the Treatment Guideline.
