Ophthalmia neonatorum is conjunctivitis occurring in a newborn during the first month of life; it is also called neonatal conjunctivitis.
Signs and symptoms of ophthalmia neonatorum includes eyelid and palpebral conjunctiva erythema and edema, and purulent eye discharge.
Identifying the specific cause & clinical presentation of ophthalmia neonatorum is essential in deciding the treatment to be given to the infant.
Treatment is basically based on the clinical picture & laboratory diagnosis.
